This is a shoutout to the song’s producer MexikoDro. He’s a prominent Atlanta producer who’s known for his frequent production for fellow Atlanta native, Playboi Carti. A “plug” is someone who supplies drugs. However, Drake’s not talking about drugs, he’s talking about beats. Also, MexikoDro is a member of the record producer group called BeatPluggz who pionereed the plug genre of trap instrumentals.

Static Major is a rapper who passed away on February 25, 2008, due to an alleged hospital mistake. Drake pays homage to one of Static’s widely known lyrics, which were taken from his chorus on Lil Wayne’s March 2008 hit, “Lollipop”:

Shawty want a thug
Bottles in the club

Interestingly, Static Major made a posthumous guest appearance on Drake’s June 2018 track “After Dark” from his fifth studio album, Scorpion.

In a December 2019 interview with Rap Radar, Drake reminisced on meeting Lakers legend Kobe Bryant in 2008 on Lil Wayne’s tour bus after he flew Drake out to Houston, Texas to open for him on his Tha Carter III tour. Kobe, at the time, was picking up an iPod with Wayne’s then-new album, Tha Carter III.

Additionally, Lil Wayne’s March 2008 hit “Lollipop”—which Drake made a reference to above—is featured on the album. Kobe Bryant died on January 26, 2020, in a helicopter crash. Drake paid tribute to Bryant by hanging his numbers 8 and 24 in his home gym and also had his jerseys in the background at the beginning of his “Toosie Slide” music video.

In May 2009, Drake was robbed at gunpoint after he left a restaurant with a date. The robbers, who approached Drizzy’s SUV, demanded $2,000 in cash, an Audemars Piguet watch, and a diamond chain Lil Wayne had gifted him. Drake later opened up about the incident in his 2010 GQ cover story, saying he was set-up:

I knew it was a set-up because I had on a sweater and a jacket … but when they banged on the car window with a gun and opened the door, the first thing he said was, ‘Yo, run that chain.’ They didn’t rob her, and her purse was sitting right there. So I was like, ‘OK, yup — you set the whole thing up.’

YMB or Young Money Billionaires is Lil Wayne’s record label, that was once under Cash Money Millionaires, with artists such as Nicki Minaj and previously Drake.

Although Drake is no longer under Young Money, he is still loyal to Wayne and Minaj, who all have each others' backs. For example, when Nicki and Remy Ma were beefing, Drake and Lil Wayne appeared on Nicki’s March 2017 diss track against Remy, “No Frauds,” in support of Nicki. It’s worth noting that on the demo version of the song, Drake mentions FBG—which stands for Freeband Gang—instead of YMB in support of his close friends Casino and Future, as FBG is their crew and record label.

“Booted up,” “turned up” and “piped up” are all terms used to describe someone intoxicated, whether by drugs or alcohol. On Gucci Mane’s December 2016 song “Both,” Drake talked about drinking and smoking, indicating these are frequent activities for him.
