The track features sound of a car door opening, keys jangling, and the car beeping.

The beep soon transforms into part of the song’s backing track, perhaps mirroring Rodrigo’s transformation of her experiences with driving into a musical expression of her heartbreak. The intro places the listener in the driver’s seat, effectively evoking the experience of a lonely, tear-filled drive at night.

It’s rumored that Olivia and co-star on HSM: The Musical: The Series, Joshua Bassett, dated during the filming of the show in 2019, calling it quits in early 2020.

In July 2020, Joshua and singer Sabrina Carpenter were spotted together on a protest, starting the rumours that the two of them were dating. Olivia posted on her Instagram the demo version of the song a couple weeks later.

It’s important to note that Sabrina has blonde hair and is 4 years older than Liv. In the original lyrics, the line is featured as “brunette girl,” but after her former-boyfriend Joshua started dating with Sabrina, Olivia seemingly changed the lyrics from brunette to blonde, which is Sabrina’s hair color.

This line is different from the original version of the song which she teased on Instagram on July 23, 2020, in which she sings “And I don’t believe you when you say I did nothing wrong.” This rewrite shows how Olivia has healed from initially blaming herself to now realizing it wasn’t her fault.

“that song about me” refers to Anyone Else, which Joshua Bassett (who this song is about) wrote about Olivia Rodrigo when she was still with Ethan Wacker, because Josh was falling in love with her: “How am I supposed to think about anything else?”, “I can’t settle for anyone else”. That line is Olivia saying that he didn’t mean any of it, since he moved on already.

Olivia said on an instagram live the night the song came out that this line was especially about her former Bizaardvark co-star Madison Hu. She said she talked to Madison about all of her problems and Madison was more of the neutral one in the situation.
